oracle has 2 options of backuping database, , documentation on them brief.

to disk image copies, utilize backup re-create shown in

backup copy device type disk database;

to info backup sets, utilize backupset clause. can allow backup sets created on configured default device, or direct them disk or tape

backup backupset database;

backup backupset device type disk database;

what difference between two, why there these multiple options?

to set simply, back copy makes simple re-create of database files(the same way linux cp command does), whereas backup sets logical entity backup pieces tablespace info files. backup pieces in rman specific binary format.

why there these multiple options?

to give chance perform backup , recovery more , efficiently. example, can switch image re-create of info file avoiding, perchance time consuming, restoration process. cannot perform incremental backups image copies able backup sets, etc.

the selection of options, of course of study depends on b&r strategy.
